Thiourea, also known as thiocarbamide or sulfourea, is an organic chemical product. Thiourea is widely used in pesticides. Thiourea has the following three physiological functions in plants:
(1) It has the effect of weak cytokinin. After the leaves absorb thiourea, it can not only delay leaf senescence, but also promote the fixation of carbon monoxide in the dark. When used during the grain filling of cereal crops, it can increase the efficiency of leaf photosynthesis and increase yield. In addition, adding thiourea to soybean callus that lacks cytokinin can induce the formation of cytokinin and promote the growth of callus.
(2) Inhibition of plant activity Thiourea and hydroxylamine can inhibit the activity of catalase in plants. Catalase usually hinders seed germination, so thiourea treatment of certain seeds has the effect of breaking dormancy and promoting germination.
(3) Improving disease resistance Thiourea enters the plant body and has the effect of capturing free radicals in the body or acting as an antioxidant, so it can improve the ability of tomatoes to resist gray mold.
In addition to regulating plant growth, thiourea is also used as a medicament to prevent and control viruses, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides.
