Applications of thiourea in gold mine

Thiourea, also known as thiourea (CAS No.: 62-56-6), is generally a colorless orthorhombic crystal. Thiourea gold leaching is an important topic in the study of gold hydrometallurgy. Thiourea is non-toxic, has a high leaching rate, and a fast leaching speed. Therefore, this method is most likely to replace the traditional cyanide gold leaching method. When thiourea is present, the electrode potential of the Au/Au electrode pair drops from 1.68v to 0.38v. Obviously, gold is easily dissolved in the thiourea solution. Its working principle is: during the thiourea leaching process, gold is oxidized, and the oxidized gold ions form a complex with thiourea. The result of the formation of the complex is to reduce the oxidation potential of gold. At the same time, sulfur is oxidized in the acidic solution to form thiocarboxamidine, which is an active oxidant that can dissolve gold. The specific process of gold leaching by thiourea method is as follows: after the original gold ore is finely ground, roasted, and pre-leached with dilute acid to remove copper, at room temperature, the thiourea concentration is about 10g/dm-3, the iron sulfate concentration is 3.3g/dm-3, and the pH value is 1-2, leaching for 2h can obtain a leaching rate close to 100%.

France began to use thiourea method to extract gold and silver from zinc roasted sand in 1977, and Colorado Mine in Mexico began to use thiourea method for gold smelting production in 1982. After many industrial tests, the thiourea-iron plate replacement process in my country has passed the national appraisal and transferred to industrial production in a domestic mine.
