Thiourea is used to prepare fumaric acid

Thiourea, also known as thiocarbamide or sulfourea, CAS number: 62-56-6, is an organic compound containing sulfur atoms, which can be used to prepare fumaric acid.

Fumaric acid is an important organic basic chemical raw material and fine chemical product. Due to its non-toxic, low-corrosive, and easy to undergo a variety of chemical reactions, it is widely used in synthetic resins, coatings, medicines and other fields. It can also be used as a food additive, used as a food preservative, seasoning, acidification, flavoring and antioxidant aid. Industrial fumaric acid is mainly used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used in the production of sodium dithiosuccinate, an antidote. Fumaric acid is neutralized with sodium carbonate to obtain sodium fumarate, which is then replaced with ferrous sulfate to obtain ferric fumarate, which can be used to treat microcytic anemia. Fumaric acid is generally prepared by isomerization reaction of maleic acid, that is, maleic acid aqueous solution to generate fumaric acid, in which thiourea as a catalyst plays a great role, mainly reducing the activation energy of the isomerization reaction, making the reaction easy to proceed, and the final fumaric acid yield can reach 95%, and the purity exceeds 99%.

The specific test steps are: thiourea is added as a catalyst to 2.5% of the total amount of maleic acid, and then sulfuric acid is added to the maleic acid as a co-catalyst, and the acidity of the mixed acid is adjusted to 7.8 mol/L, so that the material starts to isomerize at 70°C, reacts at 95°C for 2h, and samples are taken to measure the acidity of ≤2 mol/L as the reaction end point. In my country, a large amount of wastewater containing maleic acid is produced during the industrial production of phthalic anhydride, an important organic chemical raw material. The technology of generating fumaric acid by isomerization reaction of maleic acid can obtain high-quality fumaric acid, while reducing the content of organic matter in the wastewater, which is conducive to further biochemical treatment of wastewater to meet discharge standards.
