Thiourea is which type of fertilizer

Thiourea can be used as a basic nitrogen fertilizer and is also a good nitrification inhibitor.

Ammonium nitrogen fertilizer in the soil undergoes nitrification reaction under the action of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (nitrifying bacteria and nitrosifying bacteria), and ammonium nitrogen fertilizer is converted into nitrate nitrogen fertilizer. However, nitrate nitrogen fertilizer is easily soluble in water, easily lost in the soil, and difficult to be absorbed by crops. Therefore, in order to maintain soil fertility, certain nitrification inhibitors are needed.

When thiourea-added fertilizer is applied, the fertilizer dissolves into the aqueous soil solution, releasing nutrients and, at the same time, thiourea. During the diffusion of thiourea in the soil, it will inhibit the metabolism of nitrosating bacteria, causing its proliferation and physiological activity to be blocked, thus reducing the reproduction rate and activity of nitrosating bacteria. At the same time, after thiourea is ingested by microorganisms, it is metabolized in the body to generate cyanamide, which has strong bactericidal effect, reducing the number of soil microorganisms. In this way, the conversion of ammonium nitrogen fertilizer into nitrate nitrogen fertilizer in the soil is blocked, and the soil fertilizer efficiency is maintained.

Thiourea is used as a nitrification inhibitor, mainly added to compound fertilizers made of urea, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium chloride to inhibit the conversion of ammonium nitrogen into nitrate nitrogen.
