Thiourea to carbodiimide | Thiourea>99% CAS 62-56-6

Let’s discuss the synthesis of carbodiimides from thioureas. Carbodiimides are important reagents with various applications in organic synthesis. They serve as key intermediates in the preparation of nucleotides, glycol-conjugates, substituted guanidines, and various heterocycles. Here are a couple of methods for synthesizing carbodiimides from thioureas:

1. Ultrasonic-Assisted Synthesis:

A facile and efficient sonochemical method involves the preparation of carbodiimides from their corresponding thioureas or ureas. Here’s how it works:

Combine iodine (I₂) and triphenylphosphine (Ph₃P) in dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂).

Add a solution of the thiourea or urea and triethylamine in CH₂Cl₂ under sonication.

The reaction proceeds to form the desired carbodiimide in good-to-excellent yields within short reaction times and mild conditions.

2. Oxidative Desulfurization:

Another method involves using o-iodoxybenzoic acid to convert easily available 1,3-disubstituted thioureas into carbodiimides. This procedure is efficient and mild, providing a straightforward route to these compounds.

Remember that carbodiimides play a crucial role in organic synthesis, and these methods offer practical ways to prepare them from thioureas. If you have any more questions or need further details, feel free to ask me!
