Gold cementation using aluminum and thiourea

Selective Cementation of Gold Using an Iron Oxide and Zero-Valent Aluminum Galvanic System from Gold–Copper Ammoniacal Thiosulfate Solutions.

Ammonium thiosulfate leaching is an alternative to the traditional cyanide method for extracting gold from ores. But recovering gold from the leachate has been a bit tricky due to its low affinity for gold.

We could mix aluminum powder (our electron donor) with an electron mediator (activated carbon, hematite, or magnetite) in ammonium thiosulfate leachate containing gold ions and cupric ions. The results as below:

1. When they used activated carbon (AC), they recovered both gold and copper (99.99% for both!).

2. But here's where it gets interesting: When they used iron oxides, they achieved selective gold recovery. With hematite, they got 89.7% gold and 21% copper recovery. And with magnetite, it was 85.9% gold and 15.4% copper.

We even did some electrochemical experiments to check the galvanic interaction between the electron donor and mediator.

So, in a nutshell, this study shows that iron oxides could be the secret sauce for efficient gold recovery.
